Girls Who Brunch Tour: Celebrity Basketball Game Authors vs. Actors
By Sabrina T. Wallace
The Girls Who Brunch Tour, is “a 501c3 to cultivate, inspire, and empower at-risk girls between the ages of 9-17 years old.₁” who are considered “at risk.” This is defined as one who is “exposed to harm or danger.₂”
These children may be located in the low-income housing and poverty-stricken neighborhoods where common activity such as going to school on a full stomach or without witnessing any violence along the way are almost non-existent. This raises the importance of why as a community, there’s a great need for programs and organizations that are here to aid those who suffer from a cry for help that has fallen on many deaf ears.
“Through our Ambassador Recognition Program, teachers, counselors, parents, and mentors recommend girls who maintain a good GPA, display exceptional leadership qualities and perform community services. Ultimately each Tour is facilitated by Ambassadors and Women who are considered leaders in their community.₃”
Where were you?! If your location did not read “365 Cleveland Avenue SE, Atlanta, GA 30354” or the building you walked into wasn’t the Rosel Fann Recreation Center – you truly missed out on something special. The Girls Who Brunch Tour took over the gym with their Celebrity 2nd Annual Actors vs. Authors Charity Basketball game with authors such as Omar Tyree, Mis-Match, Whodini, Robert “50” Martin, JaeQwon and many others, battle it out with actors Shaun Sinclair, Kevin Savage, Deon “D-Robb” Robertson, Alphonso Jackson alongside the rest of the crew.
Big shout out to V103’s personality Miss. Chyna alongside DJ Tanq who was spinning all of the latest hits that kept the crowd swaying as everyone enjoyed such a wonderful gathering with peace and a common interest in sharing positive energy as one. The Mako Girls also showed love and was in the building together with author Zane, singer Angie Stone, and Amya Roxxstar just to name a few including an unexpected visit from R&B singer Ne-Yo who came out to support a great foundation as well.
This year marked the organization’s 2nd Annual Celebrity Basketball Authors vs Actors game where many were able to give not just monetary gifts but the experience of someone who cares, giving their time back into a community where so many young children go overlooked. So even though authors took home their second win, everyone in attendance was the real MVPs. This was the perfect setting where the attendees had the opportunity to interact first hand with the ballers even during halftime creating plenty of photos and memories.
“Girls Who Brunch Tour, a non-profit organization that has now been in existence for over a year and with the help of many others like us, we have impacted many lives through education, empowerment, and feeding programs. Inspired by the organization Black Girls Rock, Girls Who Brunch Tour wants to be an outlet to display the achievements and the true definition of Girl Power nationwide. As Girls Who Brunch Tour continues to strive to expand its programs and offerings to the communities we serve, we have committed ourselves on our national tour to promote education, literacy, and self-esteem in the inner cities of America.₄“
